SANDY STEVENSON & HER WORK

BIOGRAPHY

Stevenson crossed a threshold the day she took her first art lesson. “I knew without a doubt I would spend the rest of my life expressing my feelings and view of the world through art.”

As an award winning artist, her work has appeared in invitational, international, national, and regional juried shows. HGTV’s Look Who’s Coming to Decorate featured two of her paintings.

Her current series, Coast To Coast, stems from her love of the sea and her fond memories of summers spent at the shore. In addition, she uses water to symbolically express the human condition whether it be secure in a protected cove, adrift in a sea of uncertainty, or at risk in a furious ocean.

Stevenson has studied with a number of internationally known artists. Marietta Dantonio gave her that first life altering lesson. She has also studied with AMARIS of Mexico City, Karl Kuerner, and Eo Omwake. “I am indebted to each for giving me a prospective from which to view the world.”

A love of adventure and concern for the human condition led Stevenson from Creamery, a rural community in southeastern Pennsylvania, to New York City and a first career in Social Work. In the mid ‘90’s she spent year-long sojourns in Mexico City and Hong Kong from which she traveled throughout Mexico, Southeast Asia, and China. Some of her most compelling portraits were a result of the people she met along the way.

AWARDS

2008

Best of Show for After the Deluge, Expressions of Faith, Gallery at Grace, Wilmington, DE

Juror Jan Gardner Broske’s Statement: “Technique in and of itself, like faith without works, is dead. Competent technique and presentation should remain as a silent presence, hovering in the background, yet inviting the viewer in as an active participant….Combining sound artistic practice with emotional response to themes or ideas completes the expression. The most complete melding of theme and exemplary technique is the oil on canvas showing waters receding from a rocky shore or outcropping, and thus garnered the Best of Show award.”

2005

Honorable Mention for Surf’s Up, The Delaware Valley Art League, Radnor, PA

Juror Val Rossman’s Statement: “the luminosity in this little piece is just wonderful”.

2004

First Place for The Path to Opportunity, Villanova University Gallery, Villanova, PA

Juror Ernie Norcia’s statement: “I’m delighted to see a work that conveys a strong spirit of place.  The unusual color and composition suggest an extraordinary location where one might move easily into a spiritual place”.

2003

Third Place for The Road to: Passage, Community Arts Center 2003 Annual Members’ Exhibit, Wallingford, PA

Juror Erika Neidhardt’s statement: “The light and mystery are compelling”.
